[Book Review] Be Your Own Coach
Mar 13, 2018'Be Your Own Coach,' by Fiona Harrold
Life coaching books are an integral part of any coaches journey, whether they inspired you in the beginning to seek out a new career, motivated you to dig deep and become the coach you always wanted to be, or as a booster for where you are now.
The first of the many life coaching books I came across was “Be Your Own Life Coach” by Fiona Harrold. At the time I was a disgruntled employee working in a bank knowing I’d reached my “sell by” date.
I don’t know whether you’ve ever had the same feeling – when even though everything seems to be going well, you just know it’s not for you anymore. Well that was my story; and in the words of the U2 song...
I still hadn’t found what I was looking for...
One of my lunchtime escapes from the bank was to the Books Etc. shop next door, where one day at the end of November 2002, I found Fiona’s Harrold’s “Be Your Own Coach.”
At the time I didn’t know what coaching was, but from the very first page where she recall's the famous Marianne Williamson poem from “A Return To Love” I just knew coaching was for me.
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure, it is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us" - excerpt from "A Return To Love" by Marianne Williamson
Above all else, Fiona’s book, “Be Your Own Coach” inspired me to take action, and once I did that my life changed more quickly than I ever could have imagined.
Six week’s later in February 2003 I started training with The Coaching Academy.
So of all the subsequent life coaching books I’ve read, this one was perhaps the most pivotal to my journey. It caused, enabled, or inspired me (and possibly all three) to change my life.
Now, whether you’re a new or experienced coach, I think this book fulfils it's objective, which is to inspire you into action. Fiona’s “can-do” approach and spark for life simply burst through the covers, so no matter where you are right now, I believe you’ll be in a better place having read it.
