Why Most Coaches Overcomplicate Video (And How to Fix It)

If you’re a coach, trainer, or creator, chances are you’ve thought about using video to grow your business. Maybe you’ve even recorded a few, but somewhere between “I should do this” and “I’m actually doing this consistently,” something gets in the way.

If that's been your experience, you're not alone. And I get it.

Video somehow feels like a big deal. It’s easy to assume you need:

  • A perfect script...so you don’t ramble.
  • A high-end camera...to look professional.
  • A charismatic personality...to keep people engaged.

It sounds like a lot, I know.

So what happens? You put it off. Or worse—you start, overthink it, get frustrated, and stop.

But here’s the truth no one tells you: The best videos aren’t perfect. They’re the ones that are real.

The Real Reason We Overthink Video

Let’s be honest. The problem isn’t time, equipment, or skill. It’s fear.

Fear of looking unprofessional. Fear of not saying the right thing. Fear that nobody will watch.

But perfectionism is just another word for procrastination. It stops so many great coaches from showing up on video and helping the people who actually need them.

And the irony? The more polished and scripted a video feels, the less people will probably connect with it. Why? Because coaching is personal. People don’t want perfect. They want relatable, human, and helpful.

You Don’t Need Fancy. You Need Clarity.

Think about the last time you watched a video from someone you follow. Was it perfect? Probably not. Did it feel natural? Engaging? Maybe even a little off-the-cuff? My guess is that’s at least partly why you watched it.

People connect with clarity over polish. A simple, structured message always beats a highly produced video with no real point.

This is why I share the 5-Minute Video Formula with many of my coaching and business clients—because when you stop worrying about being perfect and focus on being clear, video becomes a whole lot easier.

What If You Just… Started?

So here’s my challenge to you:

Instead of overthinking, just record a video today!

  • No script...just a clear message.
  • No fancy setup...your phone is fine.
  • No pressure...it doesn’t have to be perfect.

Just talk to your audience like you would a client or a friend. That’s all video really is.
